Visual i's design helps Hertz stand out from the crowd

Visual i’s are pleased to announce completion of the design work they carried out on a recently won project by Ask-re The Property People LLP for Hertz. The global car rental company has appointed Ask-re to carry out design, procurement and construction management services on their UK property portfolio, supporting their current 2009 CAPEX Programme.
This first project, at Edinburgh Airport, was in the new ‘Consolidated Rental Car Centre’ constructed by BAA.This incorporates all major car rental companies in one area. Hertz wanted their area to be instantly and easily recognisable and to stand out from other car rental companies. Ask-re enlisted Visual i’s to produce concept sketches and general layout options for initial discussion and agreement the Hertz team and also for BAA approval.
The brief was to replicate a similar project at Stansted using new materials and the new branding guidelines for the Hertz Gold Service which provides an up market/exclusive service to Club Members. The design they required was specific and needed to provide a counter that used high gloss black laminate and include the Hertz ‘Gold’ pantone.
Hertz has a prime location as the public enter into the hexagonal space of the ‘Consolidated Car Rental Centre’. It was important to catch the client’s eye with creative and striking designs including use of a monolith in the foreground drawing customers in and creating the right ambience. The result is that the area stands apart from the other competitor car hire companies in the newly built complex.
Key elements of this design were the main focal point of the Edinburgh Skyline light box – this uses silhouettes of renowned landmarks such as the Castle and Festival fireworks. It was constructed as a ‘triptych’ ie 3 panels of glass.

As well as this, a feature wall made of Edinburgh slate greets potential customers with recessed plasma screens. Visual i’s suggested during their initial design meeting presentations that local materials should be used. This has become an important theme which will be adopted throughout future Hertz installations worldwide. In addition to the creative input everything was designed to meet strict BAA requirements and DDA specifications, for instance, wheelchair users have easy access using the flap and wicket section of the main counter.
Richard Worrall Managing Director of Visual i’s commented ‘We enjoyed the opportunity to work with Ask-re to deliver a design which succeeded in fulfilling their client’s desire to create a strong presence and high quality surroundings for their customers. We look forward to working with Rick and the Hertz team again at the next airport.’
Rick Hawkins from Ask-re commented ‘Visual i’s interpreted our client's requirements perfectly and created a design which certainly made Hertz stand out from the crowd.’
